In today’s world, it is almost impossible not to be exposed to artificial blue light. It’s at work, in your home and even outside under LED street lights. We only have one set of eyes and it is imperative to keep them healthy and damage free. Here are a few tips on how keep your eyes protected from harmful blue light damage.

Reduce screen time

This may be difficult for a lot of people, however, taking breaks from the screen during our time-off will greatly help.  Studies show exposure to blue light suppresses the sleep hormone melatonin. (1)

Blue light filter app

There are apps that will reduce blue light to keep the eyes more relaxed during screen time.  Other options are “Night Light” on Windows, “Night Shift” on macOS/iOS, and “Night Mode” on Android.

Computer glasses (clear – orange)

One of the easiest ways to protect our eyes from blue light is to wear computer glasses.  Get a pair from a reputable brand because the lenses must be of good quality to filter out the recommended 25-30% of blue light.

Although it is highly recommended to avoid screen time one hour prior to bedtime to avoid sleep disturbance, if you must, make sure the lenses are orange for the best performance for clarity.

Room lighting

There should be a certain level of light while you use your device since low ambient light tricks the eyes into letting in more blue light.

Screen settings

A higher brightness level means more blue light emitted from your computer or smartphone screen.  If your screen looks dull or too bright, reduce or increase the brightness to match the ambient light. This can help to reduce your exposure to blue light.

More and more computer screens come with a blue light filter mode built in. Make sure to activate this if it is available.

eye nutrition

astaxanthineProtect your eyes from the inside out. There are powerful carotenoids that supports your eye’s natural defenses: lutein, Astaxanthin and zeaxanthin which have shown promising results in studies for their protective properties against blue light-induced macular degeneration. Gandalf’s Astaxanthin not only helps to keep your eyes healthy but so much more than meets the eye!

  • Astaxanthin is 800 times more potent than COQ10
  • Astaxanthin is 550 times more potent than the catechins in green tea
  • Astaxanthin is 75 times more potent than alpha lipoic acid
  • Astaxanthin is 6000X stronger than vitamin C!!! (3)

The world's most powerful antioxidant

Astaxanthin is a pigment of natural origin that belongs to the family of carotenoids, nutrients known for their powerful antioxidant action, capable of protecting the cells of our body against the attacks of free radicals.   It is similar to chlorophyll, which is found in green plants and vegetables, and beta-carotene, which is found in orange plants and vegetables. Plants and animals that exhibit intense red coloring tend to be very high in astaxanthin, which is itself the world's most powerful carotenoid.

Astaxanthin is the only carotenoid that can cross the blood/brain and blood/retinal barriers.  It provides antioxidant protection to the brain, eyes and central nervous system.  It has been shown to reduce the risk of cataracts, blurred vision, eye fatigue and UV-light protection.

Here are just a few benefits Astaxanthin has been shown to improve:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Internal sunscreen
  • Prevents joint and muscle soreness after exercise
  • Brain and Central nervous system

The body is reliant on antioxidants to deliver healthful balance, and healing power to damaged cellular structures. Simply defined, antioxidants fight the process of oxidation, which leads to cellular breakdown over time.

Antioxidants sacrifice their structure to repair free radical development, slowing and potentially healing the process of oxidation, thus allowing for stabilized health at the cellular level. Healthy cellular function equates to better overall health, and is a prerequisite for reaching optimal health and peak physical performance.

Astaxanthin is a unique antioxidant, as it is bioavailable throughout the body. The skin, muscles, ligaments, tendons, eyes, cardiovascular system, nervous system, and internal organs are all receptive of Astaxanthin. These soft tissues appreciate, and are able to perform better, due to the presence of the active antioxidant power of Astaxanthin.
